Environment Development Society (EDS)

To create a healthy, beautiful, self-reliant and gender-equality based society

About us

Word from the president:

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Environment Development Society (EDS), an organisation that will soon have 15 years of experience in the development sector.

From its inception to present, EDS has always maintained its purpose of enhancing the quality of marginalized groups in Nepal, especially in the far and mid-west regions. Despite progress, Dalits, indigenous people, women and children remain the main victims of poverty in our country. They suffer more from food insecurity and they have less access to drinking water and sanitary facilities. In order to achieve our goal of an inclusive society, we continue to be a promoter of knowledge, skills and positive attitude for our beneficiaries. Several challenges lie ahead but our team will always persevere to mobilize the necessary resources to build an egalitarian society in Nepal.

Introduction to our organisation

EDS is a non-profit and non-government organisation (NGO) established in 1995 in Birendranagar, Surkhet. This NGO was born by the dream of creating a healthy, beautiful, self-reliant, and gender-equality based society. At the beginning of its activities, EDS was focused on economic development and aimed to enhance the quality of life of marginalized groups of Nepal (dalits, janajati, women and children).  For the first six years, EDS runs a saving and credit programme. The project was so successful that it creates a new NGO called Environment Development Multipurpose Cooperative limited (EDCOL).  Nowadays, with its 15 years of experience and after strong partnership with local and international NGOs, EDS works in several sector of rural development such as: health and sanitation, agriculture (food security; production support, management and market access support), education and human right. To reach sustainable development, EDS always includes Gender-Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) and Capacity Building approaches in its every sector of development. The strategy of economic and social empowerment that EDS uses has helped marginalized communities of the mid and far west region to upgrade their quality of life. Despite the progress, a lot of work and partnerships still misses to reach an inclusive and self-reliant society in Nepal. Join us in the construction of a better living world!
